(PRLEAP.COM) April 21, 2014 - The Anderson Center for the Arts in Anderson, Indiana is pleased to present selected sculptures, paintings and works on paper from New York artist, Gloria Garfinkel. The show will run from April 22, 2014 - June 14, 2014.

Gloria Garfinkel creates paintings, prints, and sculptures with saturated colors and vibrant patterning. Her work combines complex formal structure and painterly invention, informed by dynamic geometry and Japanese art and design.

"In Kyoto, I found printed fabric that was used to make Kimonos and Obi (sash). There was also pottery, metal, wood carvings and old woodcuts and I found a new voice for my life work," says Gloria Garfinkel, "I went to the theater. The costumes were an exaggeration of the regular Kimono, Obi and accessories. I made up my mind to use these images in future art work."

Japanese influences can be seen across a range of Garfinkel's works, including the series of Obi paintings and collaged etchings that will be on display at The Anderson Center. Other works that reflect Japanese culture include the Kiku (Chrysanthemum) painting series and a collection of colorful monoprints.

"Gloria Garfinkel's art is an immersion in saturated color and vivid patterning, embedded in an animated geometry," says John Mendelsohn. "The forms are clear and strong, but the structures that they create are surprising and changeable, unfolding in unpredictable permutations. This piquant juxtaposing of qualities is a central feature of Garfinkel's production, which ranges over many series of work in a variety of mediums."

Garfinkel has received critical praise for her large scale colored woodcuts and experimentation with paintings fabricated from aluminum that can flip, turn and rotate to reveal new colors and unique configurations. In the 1990s, Garfinkel created a series of Hanabi (Celebration) sculptural triangular maquettes in bold colors and patterns. She is currently working on a cycle of 100 woodcuts each featuring a word, including YES, HELP, and GIVE, and an inventive series of iceberg paintings.

"One of the greatest highlights in an artist's career is hearing that a museum wants to show your work. This opportunity motivates an artist to run to her studio and paint. The gift of an exhibition is that many people will be seeing the inside of your head and how art emerges from a small hint to an idea to a finished project," explains Garfinkel, "The Anderson Center has given me this opportunity and I am proud to be able share my hints, ideas and finished projects with others."

The Gloria Garfinkel exhibition is organized through Katharine T. Carter & Associates and will run through June 14, 2014. The Anderson Center for the Arts' gallery hours are Tuesday – Friday 12:00 – 5:00, Saturday 10:00 – 5:00 and Sunday 2:00 – 5:00.
