"Experience Urban Atlanta" Course Offers History Credit

A new and unique offering for high schoolers is Experience Urban Atlanta, a two-week intensive all-day course that will earn participants a semester credit for history once finished. The dates are June 6-17, and it will be led by Dr. Tina Davis, who teaches science in Walker’s Upper School and Dr. Greg Hite, Upper School History teacher.

  • The class will study new urbanism and the issues that plague an urban environment: civil rights and the impact of racism on communities, the foster care system, the criminal justice system, food deserts, human trafficking, the plight of the working poor and more.
  • Students will be taking a variety of field trips to experience these things firsthand, such as the Atlanta Food Bank, Atlanta Mission, Civil and Human Rights Museum, and the Fulton County Jail.
  • The class will conclude with group projects that require students to address a current issue facing the city given the skills and resources they possess.
Walker is also offering four one-week sessions of traditional day camps for first through sixth grade students. These are full day camps (Summer Explorers) and will include afternoons at aquatic centers, field trips, outdoor activities, arts & crafts, etc. With the before and after care options, these camps are great choices for working parents and super fun for the kids.
