Fun Ways to Explore New York

Looking for a unique destination you can drive an RV rental to? Believe it or not, New York City offers an endless array of possibilities when it comes to discovering a top notch hole in the wall bar, a nice little hideaway restaurant, or another point of interest that will be the little extra memory that makes a trip through The City That Never Sleeps a truly memorable and special one. This is also a city known for its subways, its taxis, and the enormous amount of traffic that seems to snare up so many places.

While on a practical standpoint a traveler will need to use the subways or rely on an occasional taxi (or ride app like Uber or Lyft) in order to see certain areas or hit certain points of interest, but planning out certain parts of your Big Apple exploration can help open up the options when it comes to finding fun and different ways to explore the city.

Don't Miss Residential Neighborhoods

One of the major ways to cut down on the amount of time wasted jumping from one subway to another or being stuck in traffic is to go out of your way to visit some of the really interesting and renowned residential neighborhoods in the city.

This includes places like the famous Greenwich Village, NoHo, or even Tribeca. All three of these neighborhoods have very distinct personalities, styles, and give an exceptional experience. All of them are well known, they are away from the most popular tourist traps, and since they are residential neighborhoods, your own two feet are more than enough to visit historical places, see the most popular local stops, and get a taste of the real New York away from the sometimes overwhelming crush of tourists in the Times Square tourist type areas.

Know the Ferry Routes that Are Available

The ferry system has been bragged about multiple times by the local government and tourism boards and for good reason! While there are many expensive harbor tours, I'd recommend skipping them. Why do that when the 100% completely free Staten Island Ferry gives incredible views of the city without having to pay a dime?

The Ikea Ferry goes from Wall Street to Red Hook, Brooklyn, and is free on the weekends, though costs a five on weekdays. There are also other inexpensive options like the East River Ferry, and if you do want a pricier tour, the Circle Line Ferry is two and a half hours circumnavigating all of Manhattan Island and is still generally cheaper than the tourist based options.

The ferries are a great way to see the city from the waterfront and capture some absolutely incredible pictures.

Ask the Locals

I'm amazed that tourists don't do this more often, no matter where they go. The best way to find new, interesting, or unusual tours or ways around a New York neighborhood? Ask the locals. Where would they go, what would they do?

Obviously no one is going to know the neighborhood like the locals do, and they are often happy to guide you away from obvious scams and towards places and experiences that they enjoy the most. This is always one of the best ways to see a new area and New York is no exception, so ask a local!
