FRESNO, Calif., Nov. 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Over 45 local health departments and regulatory agencies came together this month to collaborate and optimize public services such as inspecting, permitting, billing, complaint tracking, etc. using the EnvisionConnect database application.

Decade Software trained over 160 government environmental health professionals at the two-day Decade Software Annual Training Conference. Company president, Darryl Booth, explained, "This community is amazing. Far beyond keystrokes and mouse clicks, they exhibit their passion for public safety and customer service. Through their collaborative and inventive efforts, I enjoyed seeing truly tremendous initiatives."

The conference featured 29 educational training sessions, keynote presentations, and an awards ceremony that recognized agencies for their leadership, innovation, and projects that increase efficiency, education, or public health and safety. This year's winners included the following health departments:

  • Outstanding Performance in Implementation - Los Angeles County Environmental Health
  • Leadership in Innovation - San Luis Obispo County Environmental Health Department
  • Exceptional Reporting - San Bernardino County Environmental Health
  • Unique Deployment of EnvisionConnect - City of Albuquerque Environmental Health Department
  • Adopting Technology to Advance Agency Operations - Sacramento County Department of Environmental Management & Orange County Environmental Health
  • Excellence in Data Practices - Anoka County Community Health and Environmental Services & Tuolumne County Environmental Health Division

Keynote Speaker Luther Lowe, Director of Public Policy for Yelp, promoted "Open Data" through an initiative to include restaurant inspection scores in their popular online business ranking platform. Terri Williams, Assistant Director for Los Angeles County Environmental Health delivered a compelling keynote presentation on the power of leadership in LA's implementation of EnvisionConnect. Los Angeles went live with Decade's EnvisionConnect Software Suite July 1, 2013, ahead of schedule and under budget.

The conference also featured a session devoted to ESRI's Arc GIS Online as well as the FDA Voluntary Program Standards. "Under the FDA Voluntary Program Standards, health departments across the nation commit to assessing and improving services that ultimately promote safe food," explained Booth.

Environmental health agencies protect public safety by regulating and permitting businesses and activities that may impact public health. Examples include retail food (food safety), hotels and other multi-tenant housing, swimming pools, underground tanks, drinking water, solid waste, sanitary septic systems, body art, hazardous materials, and air quality.
