Wednesday, October 16th, 2013. Construction of Sydney’s newest town centre at Green Square is poised to begin after approval of the City of Sydney’s plans for more than 3,700 new homes and 8,500 new jobs.

The NSW Minister for Planning and Infrastructure has signed off on the City’s new Local Environment Plans that will shape the Green Square Town Centre located just four kilometres south of the city centre.

The new Green Square Town Centre will form the heart of one of the fastest growing areas in NSW, providing jobs and homes for thousands of people who want to live and work close to the city.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said approval of the plans was a critical step in delivering Australia’s largest urban renewal project.

“I’m delighted the NSW Government has approved our plans so work can begin to build the new town centre that will be an important focus for the whole Green Square community,” the Lord Mayor said.

“We have budgeted $440 million for Green Square on an array of community facilities and infrastructure including roads, utilities and drainage, a state-of-the-art library, open spaces and an aquatic centre, as well as much-needed facilities such as child care and a community hall.

“Sydneysiders are used to seeing new town centres constructed on the suburban fringe, but Green Square Town Centre is different. It will be built just a few kilometres from the centre of Sydney, providing homes and jobs in a location that is fast becoming a really great place to work, live and play.”

While the City is constructing essential public infrastructure for the town centre, private developers will construct the apartments, shops and office buildings around a new plaza. These buildings will vary in height from three to 28 storeys.

To help fund the public infrastructure, the city has negotiated planning agreements with developers who will contribute an additional $89.5 million towards the town centre.

The town centre, covering 14 hectares, is next to Green Square railway station and will serve Green Square, one of the City of Sydney’s ten villages covering Zetland, Beaconsfield and parts of Waterloo, Alexandria and Rosebery. The Green Square village covers more than 590 hectares.
