CareerBliss evaluated thousands of independent company reviews, analyzing the 10 key factors that impact workplace happiness. Ringing in the holiday season with the happiest employees is Toys “R” Us, followed by JC Penney, Fry’s Electronics and GameStop, with The Gap, rounding out CareerBliss’ top 10 Happiest Retailers.

CareerBliss data evaluate the key factors that impact happiness at work including work-life balance, senior management, compensation, benefits, job security, whether the employee would recommend his/her employer, the work the employee does, the company culture and the employee’s work environment. The submissions are from visitors to CareerBliss.com and provide insights regarding their current and previous employers.

What Makes Retail Employees Happy?

If you ask employees at Toys “R” Us, they’ll tell you it is the positive relationship they have with co-workers that contributes to their overall happiness.

“We see that companies that foster work environments that create a cohesive work unit, in-turn create employee relationships that help to improve the company culture and happy shopping experiences for both employees and customers,” says Golledge.

For all retailers in the CareerBliss Happiest Retailer List for 2013, senior management had a big influence on their overall ranking. All top five retailers listed their senior management as above average and some even excellent, helping to boost their overall happiness.

Lastly, many employees stated they were very satisfied with the type of work they do each day, working with the public is something they love to do.
