Many of us like to enjoy travelling without the worry of money. We’ll do our research, pay attention to the currency and understand exchange rates (transferring money abroad? However, working while travelling is essential for many of us. It’s important to have an income. Luckily, Australia is a great place for travellers and offers plenty of options to earn some cash. So, what jobs could you do when travelling in Australia? Here are some jobs could you do when travelling in Australia.

Harvesting

Australia is full of land which is ripe for growing fruits and vegetables. This means that there are plenty of fruit picking jobs available, and they’re perfect for travellers. It’s tiring work, but you’ll get to meet lots of interesting people and spend time amongst nature. You’ll be paid Australian minimum wage, which is much higher than the UK and the US, at $21.6 per hour. Not sure how to find harvesting jobs? Check hostel notice boards, local information centres and online.

Pearling

Pearling is a type of harvesting that is unique to northern Western Australia, the Northern Territory and northern Queensland. It involves working on a small boat, pulling up panels of oysters, running them through a high-powered washing machine and retrieving the pearls. Like harvesting, it’s full on manual labour and isn’t for everyone. However, many people enjoy the sense of adventure and the chance to do work that they wouldn’t find in their home country. You’ll make good money, get free accommodation and food, and see some incredible wildlife.

Hospitality

Of course, hospitality jobs aren’t unique to Australia. You can do them anywhere. However, Australia offers plenty because drinking is a huge part of the culture. You’ll need to be fun, sociable and enjoy meeting new people. Hospitality jobs are easier to find in the big cities, so settle in Sydney, Brisbane or Melbourne. Make sure you have a good resume with plenty of experience, and target big companies. Hospitality work goes great with travelling because of the flexible hours and friendly people. Plus, you might get free food which saves money.

Ski resorts

Most people don’t think of Australia for its ski resorts. But there are plenty. Most are located in the mountain ranges of New South Wales and Victoria. So, if you prefer the climate a little colder and like to travel via snowboard, why not consider working in a ski resort during your time travelling in Australia? Australian ski season officially kicks off on the long June weekend, and most roles allow you to learn on the job. You can either work for the mountain or for a private company. Like most traveller jobs, working for a ski resort is tiring and requires hard work. But you reap the rewards through meeting new people, getting to do plenty of skiing and seeing beautiful snowy views.
