You may have tried decluttering your office before but failed miserably. Separating the non-essentials from the essentials may seem like a daunting task- stacks of stuff, electronics, books, supplies and paper files can really pile up and take over your office desk.
But fear not. The experts are Evolve Cleaning who specialise in commercial office cleaning in Sydney have put together their top tips on how you can declutter your office with these 5 simple steps:
1. Throw Away The Junk
It's simple math- throw away what you don't need so you can get a clean desk. Though it may sound easy, a successful office cleaning requires you to spend considerable time going through everything. What's more, you'll need to determine which ones are useful, which ones can be useful in the future and which ones you should throw in the trash.
Examples of trash include outdated documents, supplies that no longer work and pens that no longer write. It's always a good idea to shred sensitive documents before throwing them away. Next come your tools. These are the things that you use on a daily basis, and as such they are very important. Find a place for them in your office. Finally, keep the personal items to a minimum. You wouldn't want to become too distracted when you should be hard at work.
2. Use Vertical Space
Sometimes you may still end up with a lot of things that are important. In this case you'll need to be smart and take advantage of the space you have. Here's a number of methods on how you can get prime vertical space:
Wall Mounted Storage. Magazine racks and file sorters keep papers down to a minimum without taking up valuable office space.
Cork Boards. Can be used to pin important information that you can access in an instant.
Cabinetry. Pre-made cabinets can give you plenty of extra storage and keep your desk clean.
3. Everything In Its Place
Did you know that homelessness is the root cause of all office clutter? If an item is not in its rightful place, then chances are that it's being a squatter. In the process of clearing your office, you'll need to spend time putting things back to where they belong.
The most important items (office supplies, electronic devices) should have permanent residency in your desk. Everything else should be kept in storage or thrown away. You can put paper documents in filing cabinets and office supplies in drawers, etc.
4. Control Your Cable
Until all computers and office electronics become wireless, or when you're rich enough to afford a smart office, you'll always need to take care of the cables. It's not that hard to keep them in their place- you can buy cable management tools and equipment to keep them as neat as all the other items in your desk. Try clips, boxes and channels to keep them out of sight. Position your devices to be as close to the power source as possible to keep the wires short.
5. Clean Up Before You Go
Having a messy office at one point is the norm. After all, a pristine office means nothing is being done! There will always be that misplaced item and that paper stack, but you can always do something about it at the end of the day. Spend 5 to 10 minutes organizing and resetting office items back to their place and throwing away the unnecessary things. You'll literally have a fresh start the next morning.
