NEW YORK, Dec. 30, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Jenner & Block LLP is pleased to announce that Jeremy M. Creelan, Special Counsel to New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, has rejoined the firm as a litigation partner in the New York office. Mr. Creelan will work in the firm's Complex Commercial Litigation Practice and Government Controversies and Public Policy Litigation Practice.
During Mr. Creelan's three-year tenure in Albany, he played a key role in the state's adoption of meaningful ethics reform, new regulations to reduce alcohol-related driving accidents, mandatory collection of DNA from all felons, new rules to limit executive compensation for organizations that do substantial business with the state, and several other initiatives. Over the past year, he was critical to the state's response after Superstorm Sandy, serving as point person in coordinating the recovery effort by every New York state agency for the Governor, including the infrastructure and housing programs. In addition, he successfully initiated an online voter registration program for New York State in August 2013, and played a key role launching the Moreland Commission that is currently investigating public corruption in Albany.
"Jeremy's experience at the highest level of state government, coupled with his strengths as an incredibly talented and successful litigator, make him a superb addition to our litigation practice. We could not be happier that Jeremy is back at the firm," said Jenner & Block Managing Partner Susan C. Levy.
Richard F. Ziegler, Managing Partner of Jenner & Block's New York office, added: "Jeremy helped us start the New York Office and his return reinforces the firm's strong commitment to public service. He is the fourth new partner to join us in the last few months, and combined with the two New York associates we just elevated to the partnership, the New York Office could not have a stronger—or more collegial—bench of talent." Mr. Creelan joins recent New York strategic hires Neil M. Barofsky, the former Special Inspector General for TARP (and author of the best-seller "Bailout"); Joseph L. Noga, the former deputy chief of litigation for GE Capital; and Uri Doron, a leading M&A and private equity lawyer.
In addition to returning to the firm's Complex Commercial Litigation practice group, Mr. Creelan will also participate in expanding Jenner & Block's government controversies practice. "Jeremy has the right mix of litigation, public policy, conflict resolution and communications skills necessary to help our clients achieve their key objectives," said Thomas J. Perrelli, Chair of Jenner & Block's Government Controversies and Public Policy Litigation Practice, who recently returned to the firm's Washington, D.C. Office after serving as Associate U.S. Attorney General. "In his various roles in public service and formerly with Jenner & Block, he has proved able to help clients solve their most significant problems, whether they occur in court, before the legislature or a regulatory authority, or in the public policy arena." Jenner & Block's New York Office also includes Peter B. Pope, former Chief of the Criminal Division of the New York Attorney General's Office and former Executive Director to two prior New York governors.
Said Mr. Creelan: "I have enjoyed my time in state government tremendously, and have learned a great deal. It has been an extraordinary honor and privilege to work for Governor Cuomo. I look forward to returning to private practice at Jenner & Block, which boasts as talented and experienced a group of lawyers as can be found anywhere."
Mr. Creelan previously served as Deputy Director of the Democracy Program at the Brennan Center for Justice at the New York University School of Law, where he developed and prosecuted numerous high-profile election law cases to protect voters' rights and reduce corruption. He also co-authored a landmark, comprehensive study of New York State's legislative process.
In 1998-99, Mr. Creelan clerked for the Honorable Denise L. Cote, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. He graduated from Yale Law School in 1996 where he was the Editor-In-Chief of the Yale Law & Policy Review. Mr. Creelan graduated from Yale College with a B.A. summa cum laude in 1991; he was Phi Beta Kappa.
