FALLS CHURCH, Va., Sept. 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has been recognized as a leader for the company's actions to reduce carbon emissions, mitigate the risks of climate change and for the quality of its climate change data by CDP on two of its listings.

The achievement was announced  in the CDP S&P 500 Climate Change Report 2013, which tracks how America's largest listed companies are acting in response to environmental sustainability. CDP, formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project, is an international, not-for-profit organization providing the only global system for companies and cities to measure, disclose, manage and share vital environmental information.

"Northrop Grumman is committed to providing solutions that advance environmental security and sustainability to reduce the impact of our business operations on the environment," said Wes Bush, chairman, chief executive officer and president. "We believe in leading by example and are proud of the progress we are making in sustainability. Leadership recognition by CDP is welcome acknowledgment of our performance."

This is Northrop Grumman's second consecutive year on CDP's Carbon Performance Leadership Index (CPLI), which this year highlighted 36 companies listed on the Standard & Poor's 500 index. Inclusion in the CPLI reflects achievement of a minimum absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction and third-party verification of their GHG inventory. Northrop Grumman reduced absolute emissions four percent from the previous year and received "reasonable assurance" for its GHG emissions inventory and data management processes for performance years 2010-2012.

For the first time, Northrop Grumman achieved a position in CDP's S&P 500 Climate Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) for evidence of a strong approach to disclosure of corporate strategy, governance and GHG emissions inventory. Out of a possible 100, Northrop Grumman received a disclosure score of 99, placing it among the top one percent of participating companies, and highest among industry peers. The CDLI is comprised of companies that demonstrate strong actions to reduce GHG emissions as well as mitigation and governance strategies to allay the risks and act on opportunities related to climate change impacts to business operations.

Northrop Grumman has consistently improved its standing in these annual indexes since launching the company's environmental sustainability program, greeNG, in 2009. The company recently announced that it had achieved its greenhouse gas reduction goals two years ahead of plan through a balanced strategy that prioritized energy efficiency and resource conservation.
