WASHINGTON, Sept. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Cassidy Turley, a leading commercial real estate services provider in the U.S., announces that 60 buildings in its management portfolio are set to compete in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) 2013 ENERGY STAR National Building Competition: Battle of the Buildings.

The competition serves as a platform to help organizations improve energy efficiency in commercial buildings and protect the environment. Sixty of Cassidy Turley's managed properties will compete against more than 3,200 other participants across the country to diminish energy waste through improvements in energy efficiency, with help from EPA's ENERGY STAR program.

"As an ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year, Cassidy Turley is excited to advance our commitment to improving our buildings' energy efficiency with the help of the ENERGY STAR program and the National Building Competition," said Evan Tyroler, Vice President, Sustainability Services, at Cassidy Turley. "Making the buildings in Cassidy Turley's property management portfolio more energy efficient is one of the most effective ways for us to improve our built environment and produce cost savings for building owners and tenants, and we are excited to demonstrate our properties' ability to shed energy waste."

Cassidy Turley participants include buildings located in Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, Houston, Cincinnati, Minneapolis and Raleigh, NC, representing more than 10 million square feet of managed space. These 60 properties will compete to reduce energy consumption in order to demonstrate that they are the competition's "biggest loser."

Competitors will measure and track monthly energy consumption using EPA's ENERGY STAR online tracking tool, Portfolio Manager; make improvements to their building or space's energy performance; and share progress. The building or tenant that demonstrates the greatest percentage-based reduction in energy-use intensity will be recognized as the winner in April 2014.

"Thousands of buildings across the country are going on energy diets with help from EPA and ENERGY STAR," said Jean Lupinacci, Director of EPA's ENERGY STAR Commercial Buildings Program. "Organizations like those competing in this year's National Building Competition are taking a bold step by putting themselves in the spotlight as they compete to protect the environment and save as much energy as possible."

According to the EPA, energy use in commercial buildings accounts for nearly 20% of total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions at a cost of more than $100 billion per year. On average, 30% of energy used in commercial buildings is wasted. Cassidy Turley is proud to work with EPA's ENERGY STAR program to both save owners money and reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions entering our atmosphere each year.
