Perth 26 October 2013. Minister for Parks and Wildlife Bess Price said an exciting opportunity has opened up for an organisation or individual to manage a campground in one of the Top End’s most popular parks.
“Parks and Wildlife are seeking Expressions of Interest from appropriately qualified and experienced organisations or individuals to operate the campground and kiosk at Leliyn (Edith Falls) within Nitmiluk National Park,” Mrs Price said.
“Leliyn is around 60kms north east of Katherine by road and attracts around 80,000 visitors and 15,000 campers per year.
“The Country Liberals are working hard to promote the Territory as a top tourist destination and to enhance the use of our parks and reserves.
“The Territory has such a wonderful outdoor lifestyle, and we want efficient individuals or organisations working in parks such at Nitmiluk to help share with the world what we have on offer.
“Nitmiluk National Park offers an extended bush walking opportunity on the Jatbula Trail, beginning at Katherine Gorge and finishing at Leliyn, taking in 60kms of pristine country over 5 days of walking.
“There is also safe waterfall swimming in the dry season, an extensive picnic area and popular camping ground.”
The 292,800 hectare national park is owned by the Jawoyn Aboriginal people and jointly managed with Parks and Wildlife.
The Nitmiluk Board of Management is responsible for overseeing the management of the park which is managed in accordance with the Nitmiluk Plan of Management.
Organisations and individuals are invited to propose other services that might add value and enhance the visitor experience.
It is proposed the successful applicant will be offered a concession for the provision of campground management and kiosk operation for a period of five years, plus five years extension option.
