Giant Food Alerts Customers To Voluntary Recall Of Baked Beans From The Deli Department

LANDOVER, Md., Oct. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Giant Food of Landover, Md., upon notification from its supplier, Reser's Fine Foods, announced it has removed from sale several varieties of its store packaged baked beans, found in the deli case, due to possible contamination by listeria monocytogenes. 

The following products are included in this recall:

  • BBQ Baked Beans with Beef (sold in full service deli case), UPC 24359000000, with sell by dates of October 15October 26, 2013
  • Baked Beans with Beef (sold in Deli To Go case), UPC 20738520000, with sell by dates of October 15October 26, 2013  
  • Fresh BBQ Beans (sold in full service deli case), UPC 24110000000, with sell by dates of October 15October 26, 2013  

Giant has received no reports of illnesses to date. Customers who have purchased the product should discard any unused portions and bring their purchase receipt to Giant for a full refund. 

Listeria is a common organism found in nature. Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Healthy people rarely contract listeriosis. However, listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy.
