The IGF, which is sponsored by the United Nations, is a "multi-stakeholder" event which means that anyone with an interest in the Internet — individuals, organizations, companies and government — gets to participate in person or remotely. Discussions focus on a wide range of Internet policy issues, including freedom of speech, accessibility, security and issues regarding the rights, responsibilities and protection of online children and youth.

The two workshops organized by ConnectSafely are "Child Protection vs. the Rights of the Child" and "Empowering Global Youth through Digital Citizenship."

Young people from around the world will participate in both workshops. Other panelists include John Carr, Children's Charities' Coalition on Internet Safety (UK); Janice Richardson, European Schoolnet and Insafe (Belgium); Nevine Tewfit, Ministry of Communications (Egypt); Yannis Li, Dot Kids Foundation (Hong Kong), Kimberly Sanchez and Jacqueline Boucher, Microsoft (US) and Anjan Bose, ECPAT International (Thailand).

ConnectSafely co-director Larry Magid is also participating on a panel, "A Better Internet with You(th) ... Connecting the Dots," organized by Janice Richardson, director of Insafe, the global sponsor of Safer Internet Day. ConnectSafely is the U.S. host of the Safer Internet Day US program.
