The researchers were looking to understand the characteristics of online Algebra I courses available in the market and to inform future course development. The first report drew attention to the challenge of increasing accessibility of online courses to at-risk and struggling students.

"We are incredibly pleased to be included in this initial report to help education providers refine Algebra I course development, and we look forward to the results of the second phase of the study," said Cynthia Rogan, vice president of marketing for Apex Learning.

For the initial study, researchers focused on course characteristics that are most likely to support student learning. The report outlined factors that contribute to successful learning, including course content and organization, instructional strategies, media design and assessments.

Apex Learning will also be included in the next phase of SRI research, which will identify which features of online learning systems are associated with improved student outcomes.
