The recipients participate in a variety of worthwhile community service causes, such as volunteering at a suicide prevention hotline, as well as local causes and hospitals. The scholarship is intended to reward students for taking leadership roles within their community. HonorSociety.org reviews applications of all members in order to choose high quality applicants. Requirements include an official transcript and verification in the program selected. The requirements are intended to ensure members are enrolled in legitimate community service programs and to help protect from potential scams. The credibility of community service programs are taken into account in selecting recipients.
Below is more information on the recipients:
Autumn, University of Oklahoma.
"By the time I was a Junior in high school, my school and community had lost the lives of three of my fellow classmates by suicide. When I saw how the loss of these students lives affected my school and community, I made it my mission to advocate and support the very preventable and important cause, suicide. I started volunteering with HeartLine in 2011, I started out helping with gathering auction items from local businesses for their annual event Festival of Hope, and when August came, I was trained to present our H.E.L.P (Healthy Education for Life Program) to Oklahoma Youth. Speaking to schools really touched my heart, because I had the ability to reach out to students around my age group and explain how serious the issue of suicide is, and how important compassion and understanding is among a student body."
Hannah, University of Tennessee Chattanooga
"My volunteer experiences have enriched my understanding of the field of nursing by exposing me to the real-life challenges and rewards that characterize healthcare today. The opportunity to be a part of a delivery team has opened my eyes and my heart to a path I knew I was meant to travel. My dream has always been to be a nurse. The opportunity to be in the hospital witnessing and participating in the delivery process further link my academic goals with my personal passion to provide care to mother and baby."
Joyce, University of Louisville
"This honor really encourages me to keep on doing things that I feel are fulfilling and meaningful. As a student volunteer, I have always felt passion for community service. I am constantly inspired by the people with whom I work and identify the need for continuous professional development of art therapy in mental health care."
Quinashai, University of Houston
"I am ever so grateful to accept this scholarship that will be used towards my tuition for this fall semester. I encourage everyone to lend a helping hand somewhere, investing into something that has been overlooked or undervalued."
