CASTRIES, SAINT LUCIA, September 19, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- As a respected medical school located in St. Lucia, American International Medical University has found that a majority of its applicants are students who are driven by an intense passion to serve the medical field. While the motivation to become a successful doctor is an exceptional quality for all prospective professionals, AIMU recognizes that this high level of passion can make acceptance into medical school more challenging for even the most competitive applicants. As a result, many prospective medical school students are looking for ways to bolster their applications and gain entrance into a respected institution, such as AIMU.

In order to encourage more students to pursue their dreams in the medical field, American International Medical University points to a recent article from U.S. News and World Report. The article observes, "Aspiring medical students can do a number of things to be attractive candidates, such as scoring well on the MCAT or taking post baccalaureate classes to boost a low science GPA.

But sometimes [it is] work that can't be evaluated by a letter grade or numerical score that makes an applicant stand out. Volunteer work falls in this category, experts say. It has moved more to the forefront of admissions criteria because of the competency-based admissions process more schools are adopting, says Noreen Kerrigan, Associate Dean for Student Admissions at Yeshiva University's Albert Einstein College of Medicine."

In a recent press statement, American International Medical University responds, "Our admissions department is always looking for students that have not only displayed stellar performance in previous academic work, but also show a dedication to the medical profession. Volunteer history not only shows that the student is excited by learning more about medicine outside of the classroom, but is passionate about helping those in need. AIMU highly respects volunteers, as our medical school is known for producing highly passionate doctors and nurses who go on to assist patients in some of the most incredible ways."

While volunteer work is encouraged, AIMU does recognize that prospective medical school applicants should be selective when deciding what opportunities to pursue. For example, U.S. News and World Report encourages students to partake in volunteer activities that correlate with the medical industry in particular, such as by offering service at a hospital or raising awareness about a health issue. In addition, the article notes that volunteers must also put in a considerable amount of time to gain recognition for their service.

According to AIMU, students should also utilize volunteer service as an opportunity to learn and network with industry professionals. For example, American International Medical University notes that volunteering can be a great way for students to learn from established physicians who may be able to provide a solid letter of recommendation to strengthen one's application.
