They can do this by going to an empty park or football field and spending 20 minutes or so solely working on casting. A regular casting practice schedule helps a fisherman to improve for when they actually head out to the water. Though a fishing enthusiast may be anxious to rush out to the water and get going, this is an important step in making sure that the day on the water is a successful one.

A person who is new to the sport of fly fishing may want to consider setting out with a more experienced fisherman for the first few times. This allows the newbie to gain experience by watching the techniques that the more experienced person uses. They can also help to correct mistakes, thus ensuring that growth and development happens.

"Fishing is much like any other hobby or sport in the sense that it takes practice. A person who really wants to improve has to put the time and effort in. It's always useful to learn from someone more experienced. A fishing enthusiast has to be able to swallow their pride in order to put him or herself out there and be open to critique and suggestions. Some bodies of water offer more opportunity for others, and will prove more fruitful as a result. Depending on the type of fishing and type of fish a person wants to catch, the right location can vary greatly.

A fishing enthusiast should make it a point to continue learning, even when they feel that they have begun to excel in the sport. Regardless of whether that individual is catching plenty of fish each time they set out, there is always room for improvement with regards to technique and approach. Henri Degre agrees with this, stating, "It is always possible to be better on the water, and a fisherman should continue to read about the sport and focus on it in order to stay sharp."
