September 18, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- As students start heading back to college throughout Texas, they are excited for the upcoming school year. They are ready for the academic challenges that they may be facing, and look forward to gaining skills that are in demand by employers. But hitting the books is just one part of college life, and many students will also be sure to spend time with their friends as well.

College campuses are places where law enforcement is extremely aggressive in investigating drug crimes, such as the possession of marijuana. Should students be in the wrong place at the wrong time, they could be facing serious charges, which may have an impact on their education as well. Students need to be aware of the complications that may arise due to these convictions.

In Texas, even the misdemeanor possession of marijuana carries harsh penalties. For possession of an amount of two ounces or less, individuals face a potential $2,000 fine, and up to 180 days in jail. Amounts over two ounces could possibly double the jail time and fines. Possession of over four ounces could lead to felony charges, which carry extensive fines and prison time.

In addition to the legal penalties in place, college students convicted of drug crimes may face other consequences as well. These individuals could potentially be denied an ability to receive financial aid, which can make it very difficult for some students to afford to attend college. Also, most colleges have strong policies in place that lead to serious consequences for those convicted of these crimes. This includes being removed from the dorms on campus, or possibly even being expelled or suspended due to the behavior.

If you or a loved one has been charged with the possession of marijuana or other drug crime, speak to an experienced criminal defense attorney as soon as possible to begin preparing a defense to these accusations. An attorney can help you understand the charges you are facing, and work with you to help you resolve your case. If necessary, this includes going into the courtroom to present your side of the story.

Drug crimes carry significant penalties, and individuals may have to deal with more than just the fines and jail time handed down by the legal system. You have your whole life in front of you. You have to protect your rights at this time, or you may find yourself constantly having to explain what happened. It may also lead to more serious punishments if convicted of additional crimes.
