The Institute of Supply Management's poll encompassed 18 different industries within the manufacturing sector. Of these 18, 15 of the industries reported some form of growth. Miscellaneous manufacturing was the only industry that reported contraction in August 2013.

However, there are doubters that think it is too early to be optimistic. Some industry professionals believe that there are a few factors that could negatively affect business in the near future. Not only that, the Institute of Supply Management's poll was generated in the midst of concerns revolving around the Federal Reserve's plans to reduce quantitative easing.

In June 2013, employers added 188,000 new jobs, but this number decreased to 162,000 the following month.
