Specifically, the article states, "Spaceworks, a nonprofit created by the city in 2011 to develop affordable workspace for artists in New York, opened its first rental facility [Aug. 20], the first of five planned sites totaling 30,000 square feet. The first site, a 3,800 square foot space in Long Island City, is intended for performing artists, with three rehearsal rooms for dance and theater and practice studios for musicians. The second location, with two 200 square foot visual art studios, is set to open next month in Gowanus. The five sites in Queens, Brooklyn and Governors Island will cost $5.8 million, largely funded by the city, and are expected to be complete by 2015."

If you take that away, how many people think of this as the best city in the world? So you cannot have the NYC you have today with all its swank-boomtown vibe without NYC first having been such hospitable ground to so many important and amazing artists. Without every cultural and artistic phenomenon that's been born here over the last 40 years, there is no One 57, there is no 145 Hudson Street."
