University Area CDC Honors Nine Community Pioneers at Awards Banquet

    TAMPA, FL, September 13, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- On Friday, Sept. 6, the University Area CDC (UACDC) recognized individuals, businesses and organizations that have demonstrated exceptional leadership, commitment and generosity in Hillsborough County and the University area throughout the year. The 2013 Awards Banquet "The World Next Door: Celebrating the Cultures of our Community!" also featured a cultural celebration showcasing art, music, native cuisine and entertainment from area Latin and Caribbean organizations.

The 2013 award winners are Davin Joseph, offensive lineman for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and founder of the Davin Joseph Foundation and Davin's Dream Team; Chloe Coney, founder and former president of the CDC of Tampa; Cielo Gomez, founder and director of Casa Chiapas Tampa Foundation; Dr. Paulette C. Walker, national president of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.; Deputy Jamey Ketler, Hillsborough County Sheriff, District 1; Alondra Molina, community teenager leading a girls mentoring program; Bridge Healthcare Clinic; Avesta Communities; and Extra Care Pharmacy, Inc.

Davin Joseph received this year's Tom Locke Leadership Award. The Davin Joseph Foundation and Davin's Dream Team provides inner city schools and community-based clubs with the support to enhance their athletic and performing arts programs. "I am honored to receive this prestigious award dedicated to such a special person to the UACDC and the community of Tampa," said Joseph. "My commitment to the community has been very strong, but I look forward to getting more involved with the UACDC and their partner's coalition with the leadership of Dan Jurman and Gene Marshall. I believe it will help me be a better person for Tampa Bay."

The Tower of Achievement Award winner, Chloe Coney, has been a stalwart in the East Tampa community for more than 30 years. Her efforts have led the way in the revitalization of troubled neighborhoods. "I am so honored and grateful to receive this award. When many saw our community blighted, we saw our community with neighbors helping neighbors, children graduating from high school and going to college and new homes and apartments being built. It is a blessing to have CDC's like UACDC, CDC of Tampa, Inc. and others to be a catalyst for change," Coney said.Each nominee and winner has done something extraordinary for his or her community, standing out among the rest to qualify for such an exemplary award.

"These individuals and organizations are truly making a positive impact in Hillsborough County," said Dan Jurman, executive director and CEO of UACDC. "Working together, we can continue to make a difference and focus on improving the lives of the residents in our communities."
