According to the studies, owners of diesel engine-powered vehicles saved up to $6,000 in costs compared to gasoline vehicles over a three to five year period. This figure is known as the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

Researchers analyzed how these recent findings have proven that diesel engines are smarter investments for consumers. People are becoming more attracted to diesel engines' impressive fuel efficiency. Even though diesel gas often costs more than regular gas, the latter does not provide the best utilization of fuel. Diesel engines sport 20 to 40 times better fuel efficiency than regular gas.

The amount of diesel vehicles on the road is expected to double within the next two years. Drivers are turning their attention to these new models as they begin to increase their fuel standards and provide greater vehicle attributes. By 2025, fuel standards are expected to hit roughly 54 miles-per-gallon.

The study conducted by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute showed comparisons between traditional gas vehicles and diesel powered cars. As far as fuel efficiency, diesel vehicles experienced up to 44 percent better mileage than regular gas. Fuel cost differences ranged from 10 percent to 29 percent.

The study also showed the depreciation statistics between the two fuel types. Over a three-year time frame, 11 out of 12 diesel vehicles retained a higher value over regular gas vehicles. Of this figure, eight showed higher savings ranging from 17 percent to 46 percent. Over a five-year time frame, nine out of 10 diesel vehicles held a better value compared to regular gasoline equivalents. Five of these vehicles showed higher savings that ranged from 10 percent to 39 percent.

A representative from Blake's Remanufacturing commented on diesel engines' efficiency by stating, "These days, diesels are designed to run on a new, low-sulfur version of diesel fuel, sometimes called 'clean diesel,' which produces less pollution and cuts back on that sooty smell reminiscent of the '80s. In Europe, 50 percent of all cars that are sold run on diesel. And the trend is increasing not decreasing. Blake's research indicates that the diesel engine will not only sustain but increase over the next 10 years, giving us a sustainable business model moving forward."
