September 12, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Labor Day weekend not only marks the beginning of the school year in most districts, it is also one of the most popular travel holidays of the year. With more families taking to the roads to squeeze in one last trip of the summer, it is not altogether surprising that traffic can become snarled in the Las Vegas area -- and with more traffic comes more car accidents in Las Vegas.

Weekend started with four crashes in an hour and a half

As the holiday weekend kicked off, police responded to an early string of Las Vegas car accidents. In just 90 minutes on Friday August 30, there were four serious accidents on major Las Vegas roadways.

In the most serious incident on Friday, six vehicles piled up near the 215 Beltway and the Las Vegas Boulevard exit. One of the vehicles was a large flatbed truck, and although several serious injuries were reported, none of them were life threatening.

On Saturday night, police reported a fatal crash in Henderson. A 23-year-old man was killed as a passenger in an automobile that was crushed after speeding into a block wall. The driver survived, but police believe it may have been a drunk driving accident. If an investigation reveals a blood-alcohol content higher than the legal limit, the driver could face criminal charges. In addition, the driver, if it is determined that he was negligent in causing the accident due to his intoxication, could be sued civilly and forced to pay monetary damages in a wrongful death suit brought by the family of the passenger.

As Labor Day weekend drew to a close, a truck accident involving two full-size tractor-trailers served as a reminder that devastating accidents can occur at any time, in holiday traffic or otherwise. A diesel leak sparked flames at the site of the accident, which left one of the big rigs on its side. The truck crash occurred just south of Las Vegas on Interstate 15.
