Fremont County, WY - Summer time is Powwow season. In Wind River Country, a different Powwow can be experienced every week during this season. Powwows can be traced back to pre-European times when Plains Indians used dance to honor tribal members, recognize important events, and seek protection for warriors and hunters. Today, Powwows have become an important way for Native Americans to keep their culture and traditions alive. The Northern Arapaho Cultural Experience, traditional tepees and Northern Arapaho dancing and storytelling are showcased on Tuesdays in July and August at the Wind River Hotel and Casino near Riverton. Storytellers, drummers, and dancers come together at 6 p.m. to share the Northern Arapaho culture.
The Museum of the American West in Lander hosts the "Eagle Spirit Dancers" July 16, 23, 30 and August 6, 13, 20 at 7 p.m.
