Diagnostic Imaging Covers Screening Mammography Controversy

E-mail Print PDF

NORWALK, Conn., Feb. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- UBM Medica US announces that Diagnostic Imaging, a leading online community for medical imaging professionals, explored in two related blogs the latest controversy around a recent screening mammography study.

Radiologists Ken Keller, MD, and Eric Postal, MD, both regular contributors to Diagnostic Imaging, offered their remarks related to a recent BMJ study that found annual mammograms for women aged 40 to 59 do not reduce breast cancer mortality and may result in over-diagnosis. The study reopened the debate over screening mammography recommendations, and the American College of Radiology called the study flawed and misleading.

In his column, Dr. Keller detailed why the recent study, and therefore the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommendations based on the same data from the Canadian National Breast Screening Study, is flawed, including:

  • The original study was conducted 20 years ago with poor quality mammography.
  • Women were not properly selected or randomized for the original trial.

Dr. Postal offers a biting commentary in which he ponders a future where screening mammography is determined to have no meaningful benefit. Patients would still demand it, he says, but the practice and the reimbursement process would lack regulation.
