AURORA, Ill., Oct. 1, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Gas price averages for Illinois and Indiana have dropped significantly  with drivers currently paying on average, $3.48 and $3.34 respectively for a gallon of regular unleaded. Gas prices dropped $.28 in September in Illinois and $.34 in Indiana, marking the largest monthly decline since October 2012.

In September in Illinois, gas prices averaged $3.65, which was down $.06 from August and down $.42 from a year ago. In northern Indiana, gas prices averaged $3.51 in September, which was down $.14 from August and down $.47 from September 2012.  

"Drivers in Illinois and Indiana are paying the lowest gas prices since February due to an abundance of gasoline supply, the annual switch over to the less expensive winter blend of gasoline and the end of summer driving season," said Beth Mosher director of public affairs for AAA Chicago. "The rest of autumn looks promising for continued lower gas prices barring significant refinery issues or higher oil costs."

Other September monthly averages across the region:

• In Cook County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.86, which is down $.04 from last month and $.46 lower than last year's price-per-gallon.
• In DuPage County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.68 per gallon, which is a $.07 decrease from August and down $.47 from last year.
• In Kane County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.62 per gallon, which is down $.09 compared to last month and $.51 lower than October 2012's price.
• In Lake County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.61 per gallon, which is $.10 lower than last month and down by $.51 compared to this time last year.
• In McHenry County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.67 per gallon, which is $.07 lower than last month's average and $.48 lower than October 2012's price.
• In Will County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.63 per gallon, which is $.07 lower compared to last month and $.47 lower compared to last year.
• In Champaign County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.48 per gallon, an decrease of $.02 from last month and a decrease of $.39 from last year.
• In McLean County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.50 per gallon, which is $.09 lower from last month and $.30 lower than last year.
• In Peoria County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.56 per gallon, which is down $.05 compared to last month and down $.37 from October 2012.
• In Sangamon County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.50 per gallon, which is $.11 lower than last month and $.36 lower than last year.
• In Winnebago County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.57 per gallon, a decrease of $.01 from last month and $.42 lower than October 2012.
• In Allen County, Ind., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.49 per gallon, which is $.07 lower from last month and $.35 lower than October 2012's price.
• In Lake County, Ind., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.52 per gallon, which is down $.14 from last month's average and a $.47 decrease from a year ago.
• In Porter County, Ind., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.50 per gallon, which is $.16 lower than last month and $.48 lower than last year.
• In St. Joseph County, Ind., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $3.53 per gallon, which is $.07 lower compared to last month and $.36 lower compared to last year.
