DALLAS and Fort Worth, Texas, Oct. 1, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- NBC 5 / KXAS-TV Dallas-Fort Worth opened its state-of-the-art broadcasting and multimedia news facility located in The CentrePort Business Park, just south of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport today, October 1, 2013.
The technologically advanced facility, named The Studios at DFW, is specifically designed to provide the resources for journalists to collect, interpret and report the news and information most relevant to North Texans 24-hours each day on multiple distribution platforms including NBC 5, Telemundo 39, COZI TV, NBCDFW.COM and Mobile DTV.
"NBCUniversal is committed to connecting with viewers locally," said Ted Harbert, Chairman of NBC Broadcasting, attending the facility's ribbon cutting ceremony. "The technology and collaborative space this building affords provides the perfect environment for NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 to produce valuable news content for our North Texas audience."
The facility contains three high definition control rooms operating four production studios, which are supported by a 4,000 square foot data center containing nearly half a petabyte of online media storage. The media operations center manages over 500 video sources for distribution throughout the building.
"This is an exciting day for our employees and our viewers," said Valari Staab, NBCUniversal Owned Television Stations president. "Our Dallas-Fort Worth NBC and Telemundo teams have long been committed to providing news and information to North Texas communities, the technology in our new facility streamlines the backroom process and allows them to focus more on reporting important stories quickly, accurately and in a compelling way."
The new facility is located at 4805 Amon Carter Boulevard in Fort Worth just south of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport and close to the DFW population center.
"It's fitting that the facility is located on a street named in honor of our founder Amon Carter," said Tom Ehlmann, NBC 5 president and general manager. "We worked closely with the City of Fort Worth to remain in the city, yet locate in a more centralized location to better serve all the communities of North Texas."
The rich history of NBC 5 as Texas' first television station, signing on in 1948 as WBAP-TV, lives on in the new facility with a visual tribute to Amon Carter, long-time meteorologist Harold Taft and reporter Bobbie Wygant. Subtle design elements like refurbished antique studio lights from the original WBAP-TV studios accent the building's interior.
Located on the site of the former Greater Southwest International Airport (Amon Carter Field), the building design combines mid-century modern influence and elements invoking the regional airports of the 1950's and 60's. The interior design maximizes natural light and open space, featuring north facing clerestory windows and glass front offices. A creative mix of old and new with design elements like reclaimed barn wood featured throughout the space adds a feeling of warmth and Texas hospitality.
Joining NBC 5 in the facility are Telemundo 39 and twelve additional NBCU businesses, including NBC News' Dallas-Fort Worth network bureau.
NBC 5 partnered with several companies to make the new facility a reality including KDC Real Estate Development & Investments, Adolfson & Peterson Construction, Corgan, TI Broadcast Solutions Group, Business Interiors and Cushman & Wakefield.
