Window Shopping- Choosing The Perfect Window Styles For Your Home!

It's hard to believe that there was a time in human history when houses didn't have windows! It wasn't until the 1st century AD that the Romans became the first to manufacture glass windowpanes. The glass was of uneven thickness and you couldn't see through it like modern glass, but some light could pass through so it was better than sitting around in the dark! Things didn't change much until the early 17th century when the first modern window glass became available in Britain and quickly gained popularity for use in homes all across the Western world.

These days we can hardly imagine a home without glass windows, it's simply a given! Now windows are integral to our homes, they are part of each room’s style, and help to control the amount of ventilation and natural light coming in. If you are building a new home or remodelling you have the opportunity to choose new windows that match your aesthetic. We have listed some of the most popular types of windows and window frames below to get you inspired!

Bay and Bow Windows - These two window types extend beyond the exterior wall of the home, forming a nook for bench seating. Bay windows are comprised of three angled rectangular windows, while bow windows feature five rectangular panes forming a semi-circular curve. Bow windows are bigger, and protrude farther out from the wall. These styles were classically used in cottages and Victorian-style homes, and are now employed in modern homes to add natural light and provide a room with more floor space.

Awning Windows - This style features a hinge along the top edge that opens outward, forming a slanting slope that carries rainwater away from the home's exterior. They can be opened by pushing them out from the bottom manually or by turning a crank. This is a style of windows that is usually chosen for its functionality over aesthetics. Awning windows are often placed high on walls in rooms where privacy is preferred, but increased ventilation and airflow are needed.

Picture Windows - If you love to gaze out at your garden or the scenery beyond, then this is the window for you! It is beautiful in its simplicity, a single large sheet of glass that provides an unobstructed view outdoors. Picture windows can't be opened, but they allow plenty of sunlight into a room, and if they are kept clean can make you feel as if there is no window there at all!

Casement Windows - This style is hinged on one side and can be opened manually or by using a crank. They can open outward to the left or right, and allow fresh air to blow in. Casement Windows can be sealed tightly even in stormy weather. They are one of the most energy-efficient and low-maintenance styles available.

Glass Block Windows - Let's finish off with a type of window that hearkens back to the early days of thick glass and blurry views! These are frosted or textured glazed glass blocks that allow light in, but provide no view out, and are often used in bathrooms or stairwells.

We hope this gives you a clear idea of what's available in the world of windows!
