Blocked drains issues to be aware of

What causes blocked drains?

Blocked drains are generally caused by a build up of grease and dirt. Usually, this is due to cooking fat being left around the sink or dishwasher, or from not rinsing food residue off plates after washing them.

Other sources include:

1. Grease on the underside of kitchen coffee pots can be removed with a wet cloth and some liquid dishwashing detergent.

2. Dishwasher detergents work well for cleaning out grease traps in bathrooms and kitchens as they have no smell. However, do not use them on blocked sinks as they may contain strong chemicals that could damage your pipes.

3. Toilet bowl cleaners that contain bleach will also help remove stubborn stains from toilet bowls and porcelain sinks but should be used with caution if you have an open sewer system in your property.

4. Tree roots penetrating the drain part way down the drain.

What causes tree roots to block drains?

Tree root blockages are caused by the trees growing too close to the drains - especially in areas where there is poor drainage. The roots will grow around and through the drain pipes causing a build up of debris, which can eventually stop them from working properly.

If you have an open sewer system in your property, it may be possible for tree roots to grow into your pipes causing blockages. However, if this is not possible then it may be possible that they are simply growing too close to the drains and blocking them up. In order to solve this problem you need to cut back any branches or bushes that are growing on top of your drains until you get a clear view of what is going on inside your pipes. This should help free up any debris that has built up within the pipes before they become blocked again later on in life. If none of these methods work then you could call a plumbing services team who will come out and use a CCTV drain inspection camera to find exactly where the leak is.

How can I unblock my drain?

If you are able to see the blockage in your drain then there's a good chance it can be removed easily using the following methods:

1) Using an U-bend pipe cleaner to clean out the blockage.

2) A plunger can be used to dislodge any clogs but it must be pressed firmly down on the clog and moved up and down in a circular motion. This method should only be used if you cannot see the blockage.

3) Using a plumber's snake which is thicker than a garden hose, slide this into your drain until it reaches the blocked area. The snake will have nozzles that are designed for cleaning drains and they will push out any waste matter blocking them. It will also loosen up grease or fats in order to unblock your drain completely, so make sure not to let it come back up or else you could end up with an overflow of dirty water running all over your floor!

If none of these methods work then you may need professional help from a plumber who has experience in Adelaide Blocked Drains and the clearing that is involved.
