Australian CEOs Lavish Homes

Aussie CEOs earn an average of $4.75 million which is roughly 78 times as much as the average working Australian.

Westpac’s big boss, Brian Hartzer dropped $12.75 million on a house bought in his wife’s name. The house as you may have been able to guess is situated on the east side of Sydney in the very nice neighbourhood of Vaucluse. He bought the house from Sotheby International’s chief exec, Dane Hudson. The three-storey residence has views of Sydney’s harbour and the Bridge, the Opera House, and Bondi. Spanning over 767 square metres it has five ensuite bedrooms and seven bathrooms — fortunately they have six children, so the enormous size almost makes sense.

So what about the rest of Australia’s banking execs?

UBank’s CEO, Lee Hatton recently bought a house in Bronte, one of Sydney’s elaborate and luxurious beachside suburbs.

The move sparked some attention for the New Zealand born banking executive and there’s been talk around the fact that not only did the new home, designed by the late architect Paul Pholeros, cost a whopping $2.35 million — she also owns a $4.25 million home nearby. The house is so luxuriously beautiful that the gardens have won Waverley Council’s My Beautiful Garden Awards twice.

Commonwealth Bank’s former CEO, Ian Narev sold his Paddington, Sydney home in 2015 for $3 million and made a $730k profit. After a slew of scandals, poor choices, and inquires, Ian ended up stepping down from the position. He was once called out for ‘dodgy’ credit card and loan schemes to which he defended himself describing the credit cards as, “high risk debt”. He was on a roughly $8 million salary at the time.

It’s not just big bank bosses that are buying crazy homes, Domino’s Pizza’s CEO, Don Meij sold his Ascot, Brisbane home earlier this year for $11 million… He received an off market offer on the house he’d bought two years earlier for $8 million. Patrick McKinnon, who brokered the deal said, “Don spends a lot of time overseas so although he absolutely loves the house – he adores it actually – he’s just not spending enough time there.”

We’ve all been there...
