BigLever Sessions to Include Case Studies Featuring the Latest Second Generation Product Line Engineering Innovations at Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics and the U.S. Army

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--BigLever Software™, the leading provider of systems and software product line engineering (PLE) solutions, today announced that Dr. Charles Krueger, the company’s Founder and CEO, and Dr. Paul Clements, Vice President of Customer Success, will present a variety of sessions at the 17th International Software Product Line Conference (SPLC) on August 26-30, 2013 at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan. The SPLC agenda is designed to enable practitioners, researchers and educators to explore trends, experiences, achievements, and new directions for the future growth of the PLE field. BigLever sessions will include technology overview and case study presentations, as well as a panel discussion, tutorial and demonstration of the company’s industry-standard Gears solution.

BigLever will spotlight its recently released feature-based product line family managementcapability in a session entitled Multistage Configuration Trees for Managing Product Family Trees. This presentation will address how extreme product line diversity creates major challenges for engineers implementing the product line, product marketers defining the space of available products, and customers selecting from the array of available products. The session will provide insight into how organizations can dramatically reduce this complexity by establishing an automated, feature-based product line factory and using multistage configuration to allow product line managers and marketers to better comprehend, organize and manage highly complex family trees based on product line features.

PLE Case Study Presentations and Hall of Fame Nomination

General Dynamics will join BigLever to discuss the challenges of applying a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) to the U.S. Army’s Live Training Transformation (LT2) product line. In a separate case study presentation, BigLever will explore how Lockheed Martin is utilizing a new PLE-based auditing method to protect restricted content in derived products.

The General Dynamics/BigLever session will address the latest evolution of the LT2 product line strategy – put in place by the U.S. Army’s Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation (PEO STRI). The LT2 product line provides a common set of assets including architectures, software components, standards, and processes that form the basis of all Army live training systems. Based on a thorough analysis of the LT2 core capabilities and user trends toward web-enabled and mobile computing technologies, the SOA was adopted as the objective architecture for the evolving product line.

General Dynamics will be nominated for the Software Product Line Hall of Fame, which represents distinguished members of the community recognized for highest achievement in the field.

The Lockheed Martin case study presentation will feature a new PLE-based audit method being applied in the AEGIS ship combat system product line to ensure that sensitive or restricted content that may appear in some products do not appear in others. Examples of this need include complying with statutes in different countries of sale, protection of intellectual property developed specifically for one customer, and more. This session will address how auditing can be used to ensure that content restrictions have been met in derived products, under the PLE paradigm which relies on automation in product derivation.

Dr. Clements will also participate on a panel comprised of experts addressing the barriers to PLE adoption and how to overcome them. Other BigLever sessions include a tutorial regarding second generation PLE for systems and software and a demonstration of BigLever’s Gears PLE Lifecycle Tool and Framework.
