12 May 2014 Geological Society of London, The

Planetary orbiters and rovers have been discovering exciting new information about terrestrial planets and moons in the inner solar system. At the Geological Society's 2014 Fermor Meeting, scientists working on various aspects of planetary science will discuss their latest findings, on topics including volcanism, tectonics, cratering and remote sensing.

Speakers include Sanjeev Gupta of Imperial College London and the Mars Science Laboratory Team, who will present the latest sedimentary rock evidence observed by the Mars Curiosity Rover, and how it can be used to infer the evolution of ancient environments at Gale Crater.

Lewis Dartnell of the University of Leicester's Space Research Centre will discuss astrobiology - an emerging interdisciplinary field focusing on the possibility of life beyond Earth. And NASA's Ellen Stofan will compare the diverse climates of Venus, Mars, Earth and Titan, using our knowledge about them to better understand the Earth's complex and evolving climate.

Invited speakers:

  • Dr Ellen Stofan (NASA Chief Scientist) - Venus-Earth-Mars-Titan: Comparing Surfaces, Comparing Climates
  • Dr David Catling (University of Washington, Seattle USA) - Atmospheric evolution on Rocky Planets;
  • Dr Mary Bourke (Trinity College Dublin, Ireland) - Blows and flows on Martian dunes;
  • Professor Sanjeev Gupta (Imperial, London, UK) - Recent explorations of the Curiosity rover;
  • Dr Nick Tosca (St Andrews, UK) - Alien surfaces: interpreting the mineralogical record of early Earth and Mars
  • Dr David W Mittlefehldt (JSC Houston) - Dawn at Vesta

Date and venue 19-20 May 2014, The Geological Society, Burlington House, London.
