29 January 2014 — 29 January 2014 Greenwich, University of

A book which claims we are entering a new age of altruism and selfless behaviour will be launched at the University of Greenwich on Wednesday 29 January.

Dr Michael Babula’s Motivation, Altruism, Personality and Social Psychology: The Coming Age of Altruism, published by Palgrave Macmillan at the end of last year, has already been selling well in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.

A Senior Lecturer in the university’s Business School, Dr Babula is a psychologist, political scientist and author. At the launch he will also deliver an open lecture on the subject of altruism, where he will challenge the orthodox view that self-interest is a healthy and normal guiding principle in life.

“We are on the cusp of something truly extraordinary,” he says. “Over the next few decades we may witness a series of peaceful revolutions which will see an end to the rule of artificial aristocracy and the rise of a new civilisation that works to collectively resolve pressing issues, rather than cause them.”

He believes that we will see these ‘revolutions’ occurring since young people have such a strong interest in pure altruism. “Always focus on helping the other person,” he adds. “Helping other people leads to a much healthier state of mind and a true state of happiness.”

Unveiling what he calls “a radically new model for human psychological development”, he uses this new model to argue for the reconstruction of business, governmental, educational, and healthcare systems.

Dr Babula’s research, which has appeared in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology and PS: Political Science and Politics, aims to transform the way in which social scientists and business psychologists view human psychological development. He has previously taught Applied Social Psychology at Marymount University, USA; Macroeconomics and Microeconomics at Loyola University, USA; and Quantitative Research Methods at the University of London. He lectures at Greenwich in Quantitative Techniques,

The launch will take place between 5pm and 7pm in Room KW315, King William Court, at the Greenwich Campus, and includes a question and answer session as well as a drinks reception. To attend, RSVP with your full name, institution and email address to BusinessEvents@gre.ac.uk

Copies will be available for purchase at a discounted rate.
