COVINGTON, Ga., Sept. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Life Wireless today was approved by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission to begin offering subsidized cellphone service to eligible low-income residents in Pennsylvania.

Life Wireless provides phone service through the federal Lifeline program, which was created by Congress in 1985 to ensure that all Americans have access to quality telephone service and the security and opportunities that it affords.

Life Wireless has developed industry-leading practices designed to preserve the integrity of the Lifeline program. Life Wireless performs multiple checks on each potential customer to verify program eligibility, and its field representatives receive extensive training and oversight to ensure that company policies and program requirements are upheld.

"No Lifeline provider has done more than Life Wireless to eliminate waste, fraud and abuse from this essential program," said Brian Lisle, president of Telrite Corporation. "Our compliance program sets the standard for the Lifeline industry."

Subscribers are eligible for Life Wireless service if they take part in a federal assistance program such as Medicaid or food stamps or earn up to 135 percent of the federal poverty level. Eligible customers receive a basic mobile handset with voicemail, text messaging, call waiting, and other features. Calling plans offer up to 250 minutes a month.

Life Wireless phones help people stay connected to the world around them. It enables them to take care of their medical needs, check in on family members, and call 911. The service also enables customers searching for work to provide a callback number to potential employers.

"A cellphone is no longer a luxury item. It's necessary to fully participate and compete in today's world," Lisle said.
