Merlo is continuing to expand. Now Australia’s largest independently owned and operated coffee roaster, the Queensland-born coffee company has announced two new stores, the major refurbishment of two current stores including the flagship Fortitude Valley Torrefazione, and the rollout of the distinctive blue coffee cup into the very heartland of Australia’s coffee culture – Melbourne.
New Merlo’s are opening at Long Pocket in Indooroopilly and Victoria Point, along with the Springfield and iconic Fortitude Valley Torrefazione Roasting Houses undergoing full refurbishments. This comes on the heels of Merlo opening a Roasting Kiosk in Toowong Village recently. The company has also confirmed securing space in Melbourne’s famous Queen Victoria Markets.
From bringing the very first espresso coffee machine to Queensland in 1958 and introducing street-side dining in the 1980’s, Merlo has grown to become an indelibly inked chapter in the Australian coffee story, continuing to go from strength to strength, evidenced by their current expansion program that will see their number of company owned cafes and roasting houses grow from 12 to 14 over the next three weeks. With Chief Executive Officer James Wilkinson at the helm, the expansion program is well underway.
In Long Pocket at Indooroopilly, the first of the two new Merlo stores has just opened, based in the UQ Campus Precinct on Meiers Road. Victoria Point’s new Merlo Roasting Café is set to open on September 12th in the Town Centre, on the corner of Bunker Road and Cleveland-Redland Bay Road. The store will sell coffee and beans and also roast on site.
One of Merlo’s signature stores is the Springfield Torrefazione. After eight years operating, this much loved coffee hub is undergoing a total refurbishment, to feature a state-of-the-art coffee bean roasting unit in a specially designed glass case, and two new machines and registers. The refurbishment is expected to be complete on Monday 14th September.
The Fortitude Valley Torrefazione on McLaughlin Street is also undergoing a major refurbishment. As the spiritual home of Merlo and the location of Merlo’s first ever coffee roaster, the ‘Torre will be transformed into a state-of-the-art coffee training facility upstairs, while continuing to serve premium fresh espresso to the public downstairs.
In what will be a major move interstate, Merlo has secured a site in Melbourne’s famous Queen Victoria Markets. Merlo’s Melbourne Torrefazione will feature all the signature and special blends, custom equipment and will roast on site. It is expected to open by the end of the year.
Today Merlo owns and operates 12 of its own cafes and supplies freshly roasted coffee to over 1,000 cafes and restaurants (i.e. wholesale) around Australia. Merlo also ships coffee online to customers throughout the country and overseas. Merlo is proudly Queensland-based. www.merlo.com.au
