Upward Moves In 5-Year And 3-Year CD Rates Suggest Favorable Lending Environment

NEW YORK, Jan. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- RateWatch, a premier banking data and analytics service owned by TheStreet, Inc. (NASDAQ: TST) reported today that national averages for 5-year and 3-year CD rates each increased this week by a basis point, while other durations remained unchanged as the Federal Reserve has continued to keep the short-term federal funds rate at a range of zero to 0.25% since late 2008.

"Upward moves in the 5-year and 3-year CD rates may suggest that banks are beginning to forecast that the Fed will raise its benchmark interest rate over the next few years, making the lending environment more favorable for the financial services sector," reported Joe Deaux, TheStreet's Economics Analyst. "Should the Fed signal another cutback next week in its economic stimulus program, savers should grow more confident that CD rates slowly will start to rise."
