BOCA RATON, FL, September 14, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Appliance Repair in Boca Raton, Mr. Appliance, is a Florida-based source of comfort. The franchise is leading the industry in appliance repair and service in the country, and has more than 150 locations throughout the United States and Canada. Appliance repair in Boca Raton ranges from large to small, including refrigerators, vent hoods, ovens, garbage disposals, microwaves, and more. But while fixing a flickering lamp or malfunctioning toaster is not a homeowner's priority, a Portland, Oregon, organization has found a way to extend its service beyond the business.

Last week, KPTV out of Oregon posted an article and accompanying story that outlines Repair PDX, a free-to-fix company that holds community events. The organization aims to open free repair shops throughout the city, and eventually the world. Appliances are only one part of the operation, though, as the organization's first attendees brought jewelry, bicycles, DVD players, handheld electronics, and even unfinished sewing projects.

The project aims to repurpose and recycle goods for homeowners. They are usually repaired to working condition, and can either be added to a donation pile, resold, or utilized at home. The community service element is obvious, but the repair cafes are quite unique.

Events are posted, then volunteers throughout Portland attempt to salvage whatever items people bring in. Typical repairs usually include small appliances and toys, but it all depends on how many skillsets the volunteers bring. Repair PDX switches from venue to venue, brining businesses and people together under a single roof.

"Community service is something every industry can take part in," says a representative from Appliance Repair of Mr. Appliance in Boca Raton. "Whether it's donating a can of peas or fixing an old movie projector, foundations like Repair PDX can help raise funds for different organizations through sponsorships while offering free services."

The event is new and unique, and will undoubtedly inspire others across the country to take part. Organizations like the Red Cross or the Breast Cancer Awareness society can host events like this, drawing in potential donators to local businesses and venues.

This creates a win-win across the board, and allows people of all ages and backgrounds to apply their technology know-how and have a few things fixed. An article from The Oregonian says that free repair shops started in the Netherlands and grew in popularity across Europe.

"People are finally learning how to use instead of just consume," says a representative from Appliance Repair of Mr. Appliance in Boca Raton. "Consumers consume too much to begin with, and repairing old goods -- whether at an event like this or having an expert do it -- means they last longer and your investments pays off."

It is a great way to save money and the environment all at once. The organization hopes to host more events in the future and draw in more repair-savvy fixer-uppers and people with broken things. Mr. Appliance, who specializes in appliance repair in Boca Raton, sees the movement as a chance for the repair industry to start giving back to the world.
